How to Fix Error 0x80028ca0 in Windows 11/10

If you try to copy a library such as Documents, Music onto your external drive, and you encounter an error code 0x80028ca0, try the following:

1] Run System File Checker

sfc /scannow
  • If it finds corrupted files or folders, the program will repair them automatically,
  • Please wait a few minutes while the whole scanning and repairing process is completed.
  • After completing the above steps, restart your computer.

2] Create a new folder on your external hard drive

In case your Windows operating system is still experiencing the same problem, try these steps:

  • Connect the external hard drive to your computer.
  • Press the Windows+E keys to access File Explorer.
  • Navigate to This PC > External Hard Drive.
  • Right-click on the blank area and choose New > Folder.
  • Assign the folder name “HDB YYYY-MM-DD Docs“.
  • Replace YYYY-MM-DD with the year, month, and date of the day. Let’s take my example: I have added today’s date.
  • In the newly created folder, create another folder. To do this, right-click on the blank area and select New > Folder.
  • Label this new folder Documents.
  • Open your PC’s Documents folder.
  • Select all the files that you need to copy from and then press Ctrl+C.
  • Go back to your external drive, then go to HDB YYYY-MM-DD Docs > Documents.
  • Then use the Ctrl+V keys to paste the library
