Office Sign-in Error 0xC0070057

What causes an Error 0xc0070057 in Office 365?

Since this error mostly appears after a password change, you may fix it by logging into your account using the correct password. In case you have forgotten your passkey, reset it.

However, if you do remember your password yet this problem is occurring, this might be because of the following reasons –

  • Network Connectivity Issue
  • Internal Glitches
  • Corruption inside the AppData folder
  • Corrupted Office 365 because of some third-party apps
  • After enabling 2-step verification
  • Adding your Azure Active Directory to Office 365

Fix Office Activation Error 0xc0070057

If you are encountering an error code 0xc0070057 when opening any Office 365 app, attempt the following fixes one by one. Let’s see the detailed process of how to perform these solutions –

1. Check if your device is offline

The error 0xc0070057 may at times occur because the office apps were facing trouble accessing the MS servers. Since Office 365 requires a stable network to access your stored files/folders, check your internet connection first.

If the issue is because of poor network connectivity or slow internet, restart your router/modem. In case the problem persists even after this, flush DNS using CMD. All you require is to launch Command Prompt having admin privileges, and run this code –

ipconfig /flushdns

2. Log out then sign back in with your School or Work account

If you were previously using the trial version of Office 365, error 0xc0070057 may appear when the trial completes. In case you have already purchased Office 365, consider logging out of your current account. Reboot your PC and when it reloads, sign back into MS Office again.

Here’s how to log out of your Office 365 –

  • Open any Office app first.
  • Go to File > Account and sign out of your currently logged-in account.
  • Close all Office apps and Restart your device.
  • When your device reloads, go to Settings > Accounts > Email & Accounts.
  • Select the “Add a Workplace or School Account” option next.
  • Now, sign in using a valid Microsoft account and its password.

If the issue was indeed occurring because of an expiring trial, the error 0xc0070057 should be resolved by now.

3. Purge AppData Folder

All your office data gets stored inside a folder located at C:\Users\<username>\AppData. This contains all the relevant information required to log into your office account. There is a possibility that this folder gets corrupted somehow hence causing trouble signing into MS Office 365.

Purge this folder and check if it resolves the error code 0xC0070057 on your Windows 11/10 PC. Here’s how to reset all the settings & information stored inside the AppData folder –

  • Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
  • Now, press Alt + D to go to the address bar.
  • Copy/paste the below path and press Enter

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages

Note: Make sure to replace <username> with your actual user name on your computer.

  • Search for the folder – “AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewynext.
  • When found, right-click on it and hit Delete.
  • Doing so will delete all stored accounts under Email & Accounts in your settings app.
  • Restart your PC next and see if you can log in to your Office 365 apps.

4. Repair/Reset Office 365

The office error 0xC0070057 might also occur when the app itself gets corrupted somehow. Repair or Reset this app and check if the problem resolves afterward. Here’s how to perform this task –

  • Press Win + X, and choose – Apps and Features.
  • On the Settings page, scroll down and locate Office 365.
  • When found, click the three dots and choose Advanced options.
  • On the next window, scroll down to the Reset section.
  • Click the Repair button first. Choosing this option will not delete any stored data.
  • In case the problem persists even after this, re-visit the reset section and hit the option – “Reset“.

5. Disable 2-step Verification

The 2-step verification feature is quite common these days. All potential companies including Google, Meta, Twitter, etc. have this feature to enhance users’ profile security. Following the same trend, Microsoft has also introduced this 2-step verification for all its Office 365 users.

Though it works without any issue, in some cases, this may result in different error codes. Since you are already getting an error 0xc0070057, we suggest disabling this extra security and checking if this resolves the office sign-in issue.

6. Run the /leave command

If you are still facing signing issues on Microsoft Office, try separating your Windows device from the Active Azure directory. For this, you need to execute the command -“dsregcmd /leave“. Here’s how to run this code on your Windows 11/10 PC –

  • Press Windows + R.
  • In the Run dialog box, type CMD and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter keys together.
  • When Command Prompt launches, copy/paste the below code, and hit Enter

dsregcmd /leave

  • Type “exit” and press Enter to close CMD.
  • Check if you can now sign in to your Office 365 account.

Note: There’s no need to reboot your PC after you dissociate your Azure Active directory from Office 365.
