Constantly having to reset the default browser can be a troublesome and time-consuming endeavor, especially when you are in the middle of something important. If you too have encountered this issue where your search engine switches from Chrome to Yahoo randomly, then not all hope is lost!

Following some simple steps mentioned in this article, should help troubleshoot how to resolve the “Search engine keeps changing” problem.

A tablet opens Chrome and a keyboard is on a table.

Why Does Yahoo Keep Opening in Google Chrome?

If you’re an avid Google Chrome user, then chances are you’ve noticed that your default search engine keeps randomly switching from the reliable and easy-to-use browser to Yahoo. While this issue can have several underlying causes, it could be due to adware or malicious extensions present in your computer system. It may also be caused by a mistake when configuring the settings within your browser itself.

1] Restart Google Chrome

The first step is to close all open windows in the browser and restart it. This will clean up any conflicting settings or programs that may be causing this problem. In addition, you should check for any recent updates or extensions that were added before the problem occurred. If so, removing them may help.

2] Keep Extensions Up-to-Date and Secure

With modern internet browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and Safari you can now truly personalize your web browsing experience with a vast selection of practical extensions. But sometimes these extensions can cause problems that interfere with your browsing activities. If your search engine keeps changing from Chrome to Yahoo, it could be the result of one of these extensions.

Extensions are a great add-on to any browser but they can also be the source of frustrations if they are out of date or have been installed maliciously. To fix this issue it is important to check which extension is causing the problem and then disable or remove it. You can do this easily by checking what extensions you have installed on your browser and taking steps to make sure they’re up-to-date and secure.

3] Delete the Yahoo Search Engine

Do you find yourself frustrated with your search engine settings constantly changing from Chrome to Yahoo? Are you tired of seeing the Yahoo search page every time you open your browser window? Then it’s time to delete Yahoo and get back control of your browsing experience. Here’s how to do it:

  • Open the Chrome browser.
  • Click on three dots and select Settings from the menu list.
  • Select the Search engine from the left pane.
  • Next, click Manage search engines and site search to expand it.
  • Click the three dots (More actions) next to Yahoo.
  • Select Delete from the context menu.

Note: If the three dots are grayed out or faded, it means the search engine is set as default. When this happens, click on the three dots next to Google or any other search engine you prefer and select “Make default”.

Deleting the Yahoo search page will only take a few minutes and will stop the constant redirects from Chrome to Yahoo. No more confusion over which search engine is being used and no more having to manually change settings back and forth between Chrome and Yahoo.

4] Reset and Clean Up the Browser

Problems with search engines can be confusing and frustrating, particularly when your browser starts using a search engine you don’t choose. In case Google Chrome is still switching to Yahoo as your search engine, try resetting and cleaning up the browser.

  • Open the Chrome browser.
  • In the address bar, type chrome://settings/ and press Enter.
  • From the left pane, select Reset and clean up.

Clean up computer

  • Next, click Clean up computer.

  • On the next page, click Find to continue.

After performing the above steps, Chrome will start scanning your system for harmful programs. If it detects malware on your computer, you will be asked to remove it. Then click Remove to proceed.

When the process is complete, your computer will require a restart. Click Restart if prompted. If you see the message “No harmful software found”, then you can proceed to the next solution.

5] Restore Chrome Settings

If none of the above solutions work, you can restore Chrome settings to their original defaults. Here is how to do this:

  • Open up the Chrome menu and click on “Settings” in the upper right corner of the window.
  • Select Reset and clean up on the left.

Reset and clean up

  • Click on Restore settings to their original defaults.

Reset Chrome Settings

  • When prompted, click Reset settings to confirm it.
