Windows 11 KB5028185 July 2023 Security Patch Now Available

Windows 11 KB5028185 is a new security patch update that brings several new features, including Moment 3. Just like any other Patch Tuesday update, this update is important to increase the overall security of Windows Components and Microsoft Services.

As opposed to what we call security updates, non-security updates, or sometimes optional updates, new monthly patches are now called Moments or Windows 11 feature drops. With this Moment 3 update, Microsoft brought several new features, improvements, and bug fixes to your computer.

As usual, you may install this cumulative update either through Windows Update, WSUS, or even via Microsoft Update Catalog.

Note: Unlike providing multiple updates in a year, Microsoft has now confirmed providing a single update in a year, and the same will be a feature update.

Windows 11 KB5028185 Changelog

  • With this update, Microsoft introduces the full release of Moment 3 features, showcasing notable enhancements to the Taskbar and notifications. From now onward, you will see a dedicated icon on the Taskbar that keeps users informed about their device’s active usage of a VPN (virtual private network) connection.
  • The VPN Shield icon available on the system tray has limited compatibility with various virtual networks. With this update, Microsoft has imposed restrictions on the shield icon, restricting its functionality to VPNs configured through native VPN connections. If you do use a third-party VPN app that doesn’t support Windows 11 settings, you won’t be able to take advantage of the VPN taskbar integration and observe the shield icon.

What’s new on Moment 3 Update?

The previous Moment update came back in February, and while it’s great to see another feature drop, it also indicates that Microsoft has fewer new features to offer at the moment. You will not find any big improvement with this update.

The KB5028185 update brings several tweaks and enhancements to Windows 11, version 22h2. One important addition is a new button under Notifications that let you copy two-factor authentication codes directly from its interface.

When you see any new notification containing some security code, you may copy the code directly from here. You must have noticed this copying feature when using your smartphone.

Additionally, Microsoft is also introducing new features to the Taskbar. For instance, there is now an option to create a live kernel memory dump. This feature enables users to generate data and troubleshoot issues while the operating system continues to run normally.

Overall, while the Moment 3 update may not bring any exciting features, there are still some useful additions and bug fixes on this patch update.
