Once you connect both the computers, there is a need for configuring the network settings. Here are the steps to configure the network settings in order to connect both devices.

First Computer

Follow the steps given below on the first computer:

1. Open Control Panel.

2. Go to Network and Internet > Network and Share Center.  

3. In the left pane, click on the Change adapter settings.

4. Now right-click on the Ethernet network adapter and choose the Properties option.

5. In the Properties window, go to the Networking tab and choose the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option.

6. Then click on the Properties button.

7.  In the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window, choose the Use the following IP address checkbox.

8. Specify an address in the IP address field.

Note: You can assign a different address if you want to connect two devices with a direct cable using a second network adapter.

9. Also, specify the subnet address for the network in the Subnet mask field.

10. Click on the OK button to save the changes.

Second computer

Now you need to configure the network similarly on the second PC also. Here are the steps:

1. Click Start, type Control panel, and select it from the menu list.

2. Go to Network and Internet > Network and Share Center.

3. Choose the Change adapter settings in the left pane.

4. Right-click on the Ethernet network adapter and choose the Properties option.

5. Choose the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option, and hit the Properties button.

6. Now click on the Use the following IP address option.

7. Specify a similar IP address that is in the same network as the first computer in the IP address field.

8. Specify the Subnet address for the network in the Subnet mask field.

9. Click on the OK button.

Once all the above steps complete, now you can share the files and folders between two devices.

Connect two devices using Ethernet cable without network configuration

In the case when you don’t want to go through the above-complicated process, it is possible to connect both devices without configuring the network. This method also allows sharing the folder and let it access from the other computer.  The steps to do so are:

1. Press the Windows+E key to open the File Explorer.

2. Do a search for the folder that you want to share.

3. Right-click on that folder, choose the Give access to option, and then select the Specific people option.

4. Now choose the user with whom you want to share the folder using the drop-down menu.

5. Click on the Add button.

6. Choose the Read/Write option under the Permission Level section.

This allows the file to get access from the second computer.
